ccp, srl has clearly indicated that they do not want the images to be shared online -- except through "authorized" providers -- through a series of actions up to and including issuing, as i understand it, cease & desist orders. given that the website set up by mak wien to archive his work and adjacent material has the full run of collection and presentation images available, and is (in a manner of speaking) publicly accessible, what is the purpose of collating those images anywhere else -- especially when to do so goes against explictly-stated wishes? it is on one hand a matter of respect ..and on the other hand a matter of relevancy, because obviously images from the collections are shared when it is pertinent to the discussion at hand.

sometimes, and even more so lately, this "so i may see it, and then die" approach, well borne out by the mechanisms pinterest, tumblr, etc. begins to itself exert a sort of negative pressure on the work. the select group of individuals like our good friend fw (ittalidaa before) who take it upon themselves to spend years or decades scanning and making available these materials in the service of (among other things) public knowledge will see the result of their extraordinary labor a group of people who will see this image, register publically that they have seen it, and then for all intents and purposes, forget it, or at the very least, never revisit it again, even and especially in the capacity required to place it in its contexts, except precisely to say, "well have you seen ... let me demonstrate that i have seen ..."

of course that isn't true for every single person who visits or visited a website like cotonblanc but we have still have arrived at the point through, you know, field effect where someone can say that the images mark borthwick did for margiela look like "nothing else." no, in fact, the way he was presenting these things has a specific similarity to the way a specific pool of his contemporaries were presenting these things ...
